Recently I awoke to the news headline: Hamas says: “Our War is For Liberating Jerusalem, Not Lifting Blockade.” Once again, I was reminded that the war being fought in the Middle East is, at it’s core, a spiritual battle. The enemy knows his days are numbered. When Yeshua returns to establish His Millennial kingdom in Jerusalem, Satan is thrown into the abyss (Rev. 20:3) and then eventually into the lake of fire (Rev. 20:10). Therefore, he’s doing all that he can to prevent Yeshua from returning to Jerusalem. Now he couldn’t stop Him from dying for our sins and rising from the dead, but he doesn’t give up easily! It seems he believes that if he can take Jerusalem away from Israel, and if he can destroy the Jewish people, then their Jewish Messiah cannot return (Matt.23:39 & Zech 14:4) and he escapes his fate!

For many of us, it may be easier to see the spiritual battle going on in the Middle East than it is in our own lives. That’s why I believe that one of the important reasons why G-d commands us to blow the shofar for the upcoming Feast of Rosh Hashanah (Lev. 23:23-24) is as a WAKE UP CALL to BATTLE. In biblical times, shofars were often used as a signal to the start of war (Josh. 6:4; Judges 3:27; 7:16, 20).

In these end times, let the sound of the Rosh Hashanah shofar blasts “wake you up” to the spiritual battle that is warring over you, every minute of the day. (Eph. 6:12 – For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places.)

With every blow of the shofar, be reminded of the spiritual consequences of your every thought, emotion, word, and attitude. For example, you become stressed out when you have too much to get done in a day and you fear that you won’t make your deadlines (that’s me today).  You fear when you have financial difficulties, health problems or when you watch the news. However, G-d has not given you a spirit of fear (2 Tim 1:7).  Even though you may feel “justified” in your fear, stress, worry or anxiety,  you must always remember that fear is not from God!  When you choose fear, you give Satan a handle, influence or opening to have impact in your life. Also, as we discussed last month, it stops the increase of Yeshua’s kingdom reign today and in the Millennium! Knowing that, is it really worth it to fear? No! Your primary purpose in this life, and your key to survival in these end times, is to have intimacy with the L-rd. That’s the only thing thing that can never be taken away from you. You must be committed, even more so in these last days, to say NO to anything that would give the enemy a handle in your life and block your intimacy with the L-rd.

Let’s take some other scenarios:  someone hurts you, rejects or snubs you; frustrates you; disappoints you; accuses you or treats you unfairly…your might feel justified in resenting them, thinking critical thoughts about them, and even telling others what they’ve done, right?  But when you allow the shofar blast to remind you of the “behind the scenes” spiritual consequences of resentment, blame, gossip, and being critical, you WAKE UP and say, “Increasing the enemy’s reign in my life is the last thing I want to do! It’s not worth it! I want more of Yeshua’s reign in my life!”

Remember, any time you allow someone else (your spouse, friends, kids, co-workers, other parents, customer service reps, and the list goes on….) or your circumstances (your work, school, where you live, your schedule, to-do list, etc.) to control your thoughts, emotions, words, and attitudes – you’re giving Satan a handle (or reign) in that situation. Beware, the enemy loves it when you focus on the other person or the situation, and view them as the enemy instead of him.  “If only they would…,” of “If only it would…., then I would have victory, then I wouldn’t feel this way.” However, once again you must allow the sound of the shofar to wake you up to the real battle and to the real enemy! “They” are not your enemy. Satan is your enemy and he is working relentlessly behind the scenes through your own and others’ strongholds and sins to steal, kill, and destroy you – physically, emotionally, spiritually, and relationally (John 10:10).

Spiritual battles require spiritual weapons of warfare.  Earthly weapons such as: your own strength and wisdom; control and manipulation; revenge, striving, etc. don’t stand a chance for real victory!  All throughout the day, you must wield spiritual weapons such as praise, speaking out declarations and promises from His Word, giving, intercessory prayer, fasting, thanking God in advance, blessing others, and taking your thoughts and words captive. Then when you “mess up” and give Satan a handle in your life, you can break free by using your spiritual weapons of confessing, forgiving, canceling Satan’s authority, and asking God to show you His truth and allowing Him to heal your heart.

Rosh Hashanah is coming soon (Sept. 24th).  Be prepared!  Ask G-d to give you eyes to see “behind the scenes” in your relationships and circumstances. Let the sound of the shofar wake you up to the reality of the spiritual battle, and may it remind you to use the spiritual weapons of warfare that G-d has given you to be victorious in the fight!
