Whether you’re aware of it or not, every minute of the day you are involved in a relentless spiritual battle waged against you by the enemy. This battle is getting even hotter as Satan turns up the heat, knowing that his days are numbered and few until Jesus returns! Therefore, it’s critical that you know how to stand strong in the battle, and the Feast of Rosh Hashanah reveals powerful truths that will empower you to do just that.
First, as Rosh Hashanah is known as the Feast of Trumpets, it’s important to remember that the trumpet was often used in biblical times as a wake up call to battle. In our day, I believe that Rosh Hashanah is a wake up call to the unseen spiritual battle. Our enemy wants us to be ignorant of the battle, and for our eyes to stay focused only on what we can see. Then we will respond to life’s struggles with fleshly weapons of warfare such as: fear, stress, anger, frustration, unforgiveness, criticism, shame, self-condemnation, negativity, complaining, blame, and control. However, when we heed the wake up call of Rosh Hashanah to “see the unseen,” then we realize that only spiritual weapons of warfare can be effectively employed in this battle. Fleshly weapons will make no impact, in fact, they will only increase the enemy’s ground. We also realize that other people and our circumstances are not the enemy that we need to win over, control, or run away from — but rather it’s the enemy working through them. Just as he gains influence in your life through your negative emotions and strongholds (lies you believe about yourself and God), he does the same through the other people in your life.
Second, the primary theme of repentance throughout the Feast of Rosh Hashanah tells us that repentance is one of our key spiritual weapons for standing strong in this spiritual battle! A critical part of repentance is recognizing the sin in our lives as sin! Now I’m not only referring to the “big sins,” but also the moment by moment sins that control us. We need to “wake up” to the fact that every thought, word, and emotion we have impacts our spiritual atmosphere. With every moment, we are either increasing God’s reign in our lives and in the world, or we are aligning with the enemy and increasing his territory! Clearly, we are not victims in this battle! On the contrary, we have more power than we realize, and we need to take responsibility for our choices in thought, word, and emotion.
So the next time you feel stressed, down on yourself and/or other people, angry or frustrated — use your spiritual weapons of warfare. That is, 1) ask God to show you the lies you’re believing; 2) confess the lies and negative emotions as sin; 3) forgive whoever has hurt you in the situation; 4) bind that spirit of fear, anger, accusation, self-hatred, etc.; 4) cancel the authority you’ve given the enemy by believing those lies; and 5) ask God to show you His truth about who He is and how He sees you. When you use these spiritual weapons of warfare, they are like scissors breaking through the “handle or rope” that you’ve given the enemy, cutting through the spiritual atmosphere, and empowering you to stand strong in the battle!
There are also many other spiritual weapons of warfare that God has equipped you with for standing strong, such as: prayer, fasting, blessing others, worship, praise, giving, thanking God in advance, declaring scriptures out loud, taking your thoughts, words and emotions captive, dwelling on who He is and how He sees you, and focusing on just one thing — intimacy with Him!
This Rosh Hashanah, I encourage you to allow the trumpet blasts to 1) open your eyes to the unseen battle waging in every area of your life — only then will you know the right weapons to use; 2) remind you of the importance of repentance in effectively advancing in this battle; and 3) convict you of your power and responsibility to use spiritual weapons of warfare (instead of fleshly weapons) every minute of the day!
Lastly, there are so many details about the feast of Rosh Hashanah that are closely linked to Jesus’ return to the earth. In a time when everything in the world seems to be shifting, let the trumpet blasts of Rosh Hashanah awaken and shift your focus from the problems of today to the way it will be when Jesus returns. You will be ruling and reigning with Him in the Millennium to “right every wrong” in all the nations of the earth! May your certain future with Him be an exciting and secure anchor for your soul in these uncertain times!
